How to Hook Up Water at a Campsite (And the One Mistake That Can Ruin Your Plumbing)

The water hookup is the easiest of the three campsite connections — but only if you use the right equipment in the right order.

Of the three hookups you'll deal with at a campsite — water, electric, and sewer — water is the one most beginners feel confident about.

It's a hose. You've used a hose before. How complicated can it be?

Here's the thing. The connection itself is simple. But there's one piece of equipment that most new RV owners don't know they need — and skipping it can crack your pipes, damage your fittings, or cause a slow leak inside your walls that you won't find until it's already done real damage.

It's called a water pressure regulator. And by the end of this article you'll understand exactly why it matters, how to use it, and how to set up your water hookup correctly every single time.

Why you can't just connect a hose and turn on the spigot

At home, your plumbing is connected to a municipal water system that delivers water at a consistent, regulated pressure. Your house is built to handle it.

Campground water is different. Pressure varies significantly from one campground to the next — and sometimes from one site to the next within the same campground. Some deliver water at a safe 40 to 50 psi. Others push well over 100 psi, especially at quieter times of day when fewer sites are drawing water.

RV plumbing isn't built to handle the high end of that range. The fittings, hoses, and connections inside your rig are designed for lower pressures than a house. Hit them with 100 psi and you're risking cracked fittings, blown hose connections, or a leak behind a wall that soaks the substrate for days before you notice.

A water pressure regulator screws onto the spigot and brings incoming pressure down to a safe range — typically 40 to 50 psi — before it ever enters your RV. It costs around $10 to $20 and protects thousands of dollars of plumbing.

This is not optional equipment. It is the most important thing in your water hookup kit.

The other thing that belongs in your hookup kit

While you're at it, two more items complete the setup.

A drinking water safe hose. This is not a garden hose. Standard garden hoses are made with materials that leach chemicals into the water — plasticizers, lead, and other substances you don't want coming out of your kitchen tap. RV drinking water hoses are white or blue and specifically rated for potable water. They're widely available at RV supply stores and Amazon, and they're what you use for every fresh water connection. Keep this hose separate from any other hose you own and never use it for anything else.

A 25-foot hose handles most campsite connections. A 50-foot hose gives you flexibility when the spigot is farther than expected. Some RVers carry both — the short one for close connections and the longer one when you need the reach.

A 90-degree elbow fitting. This small adapter connects to your RV's city water inlet and allows the hose to make a right-angle turn rather than pulling straight out from the side of the rig. Without it, the weight of the hose hangs directly from your water inlet and puts constant stress on that connection point over time. It's a cheap fitting that protects an inlet that can be expensive to repair or replace.

An inline water filter. Not strictly essential, but worth having. Campground water quality varies widely — some campgrounds pull from regulated municipal supplies, others from local wells. An inline filter screws into your hookup and removes contaminants, sediment, and the taste of chlorine or sulfur that can make water from certain campgrounds genuinely unpleasant. The right connection order

This is where most beginners get confused. The equipment goes on in a specific order, and that order matters.

Starting at the spigot and working toward your RV, the correct sequence is:

Spigot → pressure regulator → inline filter → hose → 90-degree elbow → RV city water inlet

The regulator goes first because you want to reduce pressure before it travels through anything else — including your hose and filter. Putting the regulator at the spigot end means your entire setup operates at safe pressure rather than just the section between the regulator and the RV.

The filter goes after the regulator so it's working on already-regulated water.

The 90-degree elbow goes at the RV end so the hose doesn't pull on your city water inlet.

When you're ready to connect, do it in this order:

  • Attach the regulator to the spigot — hand tight, then a quarter turn more

  • Attach the filter to the regulator

  • Connect the hose to the filter

  • Connect the other end of the hose to the 90-degree elbow

  • Connect the elbow to your RV's city water inlet

Then turn on the spigot slowly. Don't crank it open all the way at once — let the pressure build gradually through the system.

Finding your RV's city water inlet

Every RV has a city water inlet on the exterior — it's the threaded connection where your hose attaches when you're hooked up to campground water. On most rigs it's on the driver's side, usually in a small compartment or panel near the front.

It will be labeled "City Water" or "City Water Inlet." It looks like a standard hose fitting — a threaded metal or plastic connector with a cap when not in use.

Important: this is not the same as the fresh water fill. Some RVs have a separate connection for filling your fresh water tank — that's a different inlet, usually a non-threaded opening where you just set a hose in. The city water inlet is threaded and connects directly to your plumbing. The fresh water fill goes into your onboard tank, which then feeds through your water pump.

When you're connected to city water at a campsite, your water pump is bypassed entirely. The campground pressure pushes water through your plumbing directly. You can turn your pump off — you don't need it.

After you connect: what to check

Once the hose is connected and the spigot is on, do a quick walk-through before you settle in.

Go inside and open a faucet — the kitchen sink works well. Make sure water flows with reasonable pressure. Check under the sink for any drips. Run the shower briefly and check there too.

Go back outside and look at both connection points — where the hose meets the regulator at the spigot, and where the hose meets the RV inlet. Any dripping from these connections usually means a loose fitting or a worn O-ring. Tighten the fitting first. If it still drips, check the rubber O-ring washer inside the connection — they wear out and are cheap to replace. Keep a small bag of spare O-ring washers in your hookup kit for exactly this situation.

Check the pressure regulator itself. If your regulator has a gauge — the adjustable brass models have one built in — confirm it's reading in the 40 to 50 psi range.

The two water inlets that beginners mix up

This one matters enough to say plainly.

Your RV has a city water inlet and a fresh water fill inlet. They are not the same thing and they are not interchangeable.

The city water inlet connects directly to your plumbing under pressure. When you hook up here, water flows immediately to every faucet and fixture in the rig.

The fresh water fill is where you top off your onboard fresh water tank when you're not connected to city water — at a campground without hookups, for example, or before a boondocking trip. Water goes into the tank, and then your pump pulls it through the system when you need it.

Connecting your hose to the wrong inlet won't always cause immediate damage, but it can cause confusion and occasionally overflow problems if you accidentally fill the tank while you're already hooked up to city water. Check the labels. They're there for a reason.

What to do when there's no water hookup

Not every campsite has a water connection. Dry camping, boondocking, and many state park primitive sites have no hookups at all. In that case you're working from your onboard fresh water tank.

Fill the tank before you leave home or at a campground fill station. Your owner's manual will tell you the tank capacity — most travel trailers carry between 30 and 60 gallons. When you're living off the tank, water conservation matters: shorter showers, turning the tap off while brushing teeth, using paper plates to reduce dishwashing.

Your water pump handles delivery when you're on tank water — it's what pushes water from the tank through your plumbing when you open a faucet. Unlike city water, the pump runs on your 12-volt battery system, so it works whether or not you're plugged into shore power.

When you switch from city water to tank water or vice versa, just make sure the pump is off when you're on city water and on when you're running from the tank. Running the pump while connected to city water won't damage anything on most rigs, but it's unnecessary and can create pressure fluctuations.

Disconnecting cleanly

When it's time to leave, disconnect your water hookup before you do anything else with the rig.

Turn the spigot off first. Then open a faucet inside to release the pressure in the hose. Then disconnect from the RV end first, then from the spigot. Lift the hose as you disconnect so any remaining water drains toward the ground rather than back through your connections.

Let the hose drain completely before you coil it and put it away. A hose stored with standing water in it is an invitation for mold and bacteria, especially in warm weather. Some RVers blow the hose out or let it hang in the sun for a few minutes before storing.

Replace the cap on your city water inlet. Keep your water hookup gear in its own dedicated bin — separate from your sewer equipment. Cross-contaminating your fresh water hose with anything that's been near the sewer side is a mistake you don't want to make.

Quick Checklist: RV Water Hookup

  • Drinking water safe hose — white or blue, never a garden hose

  • Water pressure regulator — always, every time, no exceptions

  • Inline water filter — highly recommended

  • 90-degree elbow — protects your city water inlet

  • Spare O-ring washers — cheap insurance against drip connections

  • Connection order: spigot → regulator → filter → hose → elbow → RV

  • Turn spigot on slowly — don't blast it open

  • Check all connections for drips before going inside

  • Water pump OFF when connected to city water

  • Disconnect spigot first, drain hose completely before storing

  • Store water gear separately from sewer equipment — always

The water hookup really is the simplest of the three campsite connections. With the right equipment and the right sequence, it takes about two minutes and works perfectly every time.

The regulator is the thing. Buy one before your first trip. Use it every single time. Everything else follows naturally from there.
