RV Electrical Hookup Explained: 30 Amp, 50 Amp, and Everything That Confuses Beginners
Shore power sounds complicated until someone explains it plainly. Here's everything you need to know before you pull into your first campsite.
The campsite was perfect. Level ground, shade trees, a view of the lake. I pulled in, got the rig leveled, and walked over to the electrical pedestal feeling pretty good about myself.
Then I looked at it.
Three different outlets. Numbers I didn't recognize. A breaker I wasn't sure I should touch. And absolutely no memory of anything the dealer had told me during the walkthrough two weeks earlier.
I stood there for an embarrassingly long time before I figured it out.
If you're new to RVing, the electrical hookup is one of those things that looks more complicated than it actually is. Once someone explains it plainly, it clicks fast. That's what this article is for.
What shore power actually is
Shore power is simply the electricity your RV gets from an external source — the campground pedestal, an RV park hookup, or even a standard outlet at your house. The term comes from the boating world, where boats plug into power on shore rather than running on their own generators. RVers adopted the same language.
When you're plugged into shore power, your RV runs on that external electricity instead of draining your batteries. Air conditioning, the microwave, wall outlets, the electric water heater — all of it runs on shore power when you're connected.
When you're not plugged in, your RV switches to its house batteries for the systems that can run on battery power. More on that in a moment.
30 amp vs 50 amp — the one thing you need to know first
Every RV is built for either 30-amp or 50-amp electrical service. This is the single most important thing to understand about your rig's electrical system because everything else flows from it.
How to tell which one you have: look at the shore power cord on your RV. Count the prongs on the plug end. Three prongs means 30-amp service. Four prongs means 50-amp service. That's the quickest way to know.
You can also check your owner's manual or look at the shore power inlet on the exterior of the rig — it will be labeled.
What the difference actually means:
A 30-amp RV runs on a single 120-volt circuit. The math works out to roughly 3,600 watts of total available power. That's enough to run one air conditioner, the refrigerator, lights, and the TV comfortably. Where it gets tight is when you start adding high-draw appliances — a second air conditioner, a hair dryer, the microwave — all at once. That's when the breaker trips.
A 50-amp RV runs on two separate 120-volt circuits, giving you roughly 12,000 watts of total available power. Larger fifth wheels, Class A motorhomes, and well-equipped travel trailers typically use 50-amp service. You can run two air conditioners simultaneously, the microwave, the electric water heater, and the coffee maker without a problem.
Here's the thing most beginners miss: 50-amp isn't twice as powerful as 30-amp. It's more like three times the capacity. That's why larger rigs absolutely need it, and why running a 50-amp rig on 30-amp service requires careful power management.
What you'll find at the campground pedestal
The electrical pedestal at your campsite typically has three outlets: a 50-amp outlet, a 30-amp outlet, and a standard 20-amp household-style outlet. They look different from each other and from household outlets, which is why beginners sometimes freeze up when they first see one.
The 50-amp outlet is the large one with four slots arranged in a specific pattern. The 30-amp outlet has three slots in a triangular arrangement. The 20-amp outlet looks like a standard household outlet with an extra horizontal slot.
You use the outlet that matches your RV's shore power cord. Plug into the correct one, and you're done. It sounds simple because it is — the confusion usually comes from not knowing which outlet is which before you get there, not from any actual complexity in the connection.
The connection sequence that protects your RV
Order matters when you plug in and unplug. Doing it wrong won't necessarily damage your RV, but the right sequence is a good habit that protects your appliances over time.
To connect:
Turn the breaker on the pedestal OFF before you plug in anything. This prevents a surge when the connection is made. Connect your surge protector to the pedestal first, then plug your shore power cord into the surge protector. Once everything is connected, turn the pedestal breaker ON.
To disconnect:
Turn the pedestal breaker OFF first. Then unplug your shore power cord. Then remove the surge protector.
The principle is the same as unplugging any appliance — you want to cut the power before you break the connection.
One more thing: make sure all your appliances are off when you first connect. Your air conditioner, in particular, draws a large surge of power at startup. Turning everything on after you're connected, one at a time, is gentler on your electrical system than having everything live the moment power arrives.
Surge protectors: the one thing you should never skip
Here's what I wish someone had told me before my first campground stay.
Campground electrical infrastructure is often old. Pedestals at busy parks get heavy use and age without regular maintenance. Voltage problems — power that's too low, too high, or wired incorrectly — are more common than most people realize. And when bad power comes into your RV, it can damage your air conditioner, your converter, your refrigerator, and any appliance plugged into your outlets.
A surge protector designed for RVs monitors the incoming power and cuts the connection before bad electricity reaches your rig. It's not an optional accessory. It's protection for an expensive investment.
There are two main types.
Basic surge protectors plug directly into the pedestal and your shore cord plugs into them. They protect against power surges and some wiring faults. They're the affordable entry point — models from Camco and Hughes are widely available for around $50 to $100.
Electrical Management Systems (EMS) do everything a surge protector does, plus they monitor for low voltage, high voltage, open ground, open neutral, and other conditions that can cause slow damage to your RV's systems over time. They're more expensive — the Progressive Industries and Hughes EMS units run $200 to $350 — but they're the better long-term investment, especially if you camp frequently.
Whatever you choose, buy one before your first campsite. This is the upgrade that pays for itself the first time it protects your AC compressor from a low-voltage brownout on a hot July weekend.
Adapters: when the pedestal doesn't match your RV
You'll eventually pull into a campsite where the available service doesn't match your shore cord. A 50-amp RV at a site that only has 30-amp service. A 30-amp RV at a site where the 30-amp outlet is broken but the 50-amp works fine. It happens regularly.
Adapters — called dogbone adapters because of their shape — bridge the gap. Here's what you need to know about them.
30-amp RV into 50-amp pedestal: This works fine. A 50-to-30-amp dogbone adapter lets you connect safely. You still only have 30 amps of available power — the adapter doesn't increase your capacity — but you'll have full electrical function.
50-amp RV into 30-amp pedestal: This also works, but now you're running a high-capacity rig on limited power. You'll need to manage what you run simultaneously. One air conditioner, not two. Microwave or hair dryer, not both at once. It's manageable for a night or two — just know your limits and don't push them.
Either RV into a 20-amp household outlet: This is a last resort, not a real solution. You'll have enough power for lights, charging devices, and maybe the refrigerator. Your air conditioner won't run on 20 amps. Use this when nothing else is available, not as a regular setup.
Carry a 30-to-50-amp adapter and a 50-to-30-amp adapter in your hookup kit. You'll reach for them more often than you expect. Both are inexpensive and available at any RV supply store or on Amazon.
Why breakers trip — and what to do when they do
A tripped breaker is the most common electrical frustration for new RV owners. It's also the least dangerous — it means the system is working exactly as designed.
Breakers trip when you draw more power than the circuit can supply. On a 30-amp rig, that typically happens when you're running the air conditioner and then add a high-draw appliance. The microwave, hair dryer, electric kettle, and toaster are the usual suspects. Any one of them can push a 30-amp system past its limit when the AC is already running.
When a breaker trips, reset it by turning the appliance off, then going to your RV's breaker panel — usually located inside a cabinet near the entrance — and flipping the tripped breaker fully off and then back on. The pedestal breaker can also trip independently; check both.
The longer-term fix is understanding your power budget. On a 30-amp system, the air conditioner uses roughly half your available power. What's left has to cover everything else. Run the microwave before you turn on the AC. Do your hair before the day heats up. Use the propane burner for cooking when you're already running the AC on a hot day. These are the habits experienced 30-amp campers develop naturally.
Your RV's two electrical systems
Here's something that confuses a lot of beginners: your RV actually has two separate electrical systems running at the same time, and they serve different purposes.
The 120-volt AC system is what runs when you're plugged into shore power or a generator. This powers your air conditioner, microwave, standard wall outlets, and the electric mode on your refrigerator. Unplug from shore power with no generator running, and this system shuts off completely — unless you have an inverter.
The 12-volt DC system runs off your house batteries. This powers your LED lights, water pump, vent fans, slides, leveling jacks, and your refrigerator in 12-volt mode. This system runs whether you're plugged in or not. When you're on shore power, your converter automatically charges your house batteries while running the 12-volt system at the same time.
Understanding this distinction explains a lot of things that confuse beginners. Why do the lights still work when you're not plugged in? The 12-volt system. Why does the air conditioner not work when you're on battery only? It runs on 120-volt AC, which needs shore power or a generator.
A quick word on generators
When shore power isn't available — at a dry camping site, on a boondocking trip, or at a primitive campground — a generator fills the gap by providing AC power independently.
For a 30-amp RV, a 2,000-watt portable generator handles most needs including one air conditioner, though you'll need to manage what else you run simultaneously. The Honda EU2200i and Yamaha EF2200iS are the quiet, fuel-efficient standards that most RVers trust. For a 50-amp rig with two AC units, you'll want something in the 3,500 to 5,500-watt range at minimum.
Generator maintenance runs on hours, not calendar time. Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 100 to 150 hours. Check your hour meter if your generator has one — a generator that runs four hours a day needs service more often than you might think.

Know whether your RV is 30-amp or 50-amp before you arrive
Carry both a 30-to-50 and a 50-to-30 dogbone adapter in your hookup kit
Turn the pedestal breaker OFF before connecting
Connect surge protector first, then shore power cord

Turn appliances on one at a time after connection
If a breaker trips, turn off the high-draw appliance before resetting
On 30-amp service, don't run AC and microwave or hair dryer simultaneously
Disconnect in reverse order — breaker off first, then unplug
After your first few hookups, this becomes second nature. The pedestal stops looking like a puzzle and starts looking like exactly what it is — a straightforward connection between your rig and the power it needs.
Take it slow the first time. Follow the sequence. And buy that surge protector before you need it.
